Managerial accountability to: Radiology Manager

Purpose of role

To provide support to the clinical staff and Radiology Management Team (RMT), ensuring a safe, professional and efficient clinical service is provided to all our patients.
Undertaking extended roles to support the RMT, in addition to the core Radiology HCA duties. This will involve playing a key role in the introduction and maintenance of our Ultrasound Guided Injection (USGI) service.
To provide support and guidance to the Radiology Healthcare Assistants and attempt to resolve any issues prior to escalation to the Radiology Management Team.

Clinical & technical responsibilities

CLINICAL

Play an active role in interventional procedures under the direction of clinical staff
Carry out routine patient care duties and other care practices as directed by the Clinical team.
Chaperone during clinics, including involvement in intimate examinations. Display care, patience and empathy to all patients.
Maintain high standards of infection control within the department and during clinical care.
Provide a patient focused service within the department, expanding the role appropriately under supervision and guidance of clinical staff.
Have the ability to prioritise workload and know when to seek advice from a qualified member of staff.
Attending the relevant training required in order to safely perform all USGIs within the department and implementing this knowledge during practice.
Contribute to accurate written and computerised documentation relevant to patient procedures, always ensuring confidentiality is maintained.
Attention to detail is vital in this role, due to the knowledge required for preparing documentation prior to injection appointments.
Having a full understanding of contraindications for the different USGIs.
Stay calm in medical emergencies and have the ability to assess a deteriorating patient.

Demonstrate consultation that involves the patient in decision making about their care and wellbeing.

COMMUNICATION
Ensure excellent two-way communication with patients, families and colleagues at all times. Display the ability to overcome any communication barriers.
To effectively communicate with all clinical staff concerning the care of the patient.
To assess patient and carers and provide advice meeting their needs, whilst know your own knowledge limitations and seeking support when needed.

Administration

Ensuring that the department is prepared for the next working day or that this task has been delegated appropriately.
Providing management of all USGI documentation, prior to the patient’s arrival and ensuring paperwork is scanned in Maxims documents and disposed of appropriately, after that procedure.
Display flexibility with working patterns, to best support our clinical requirements.

Education & personal development

To adhere to, and work within the codes of conduct for Practice Plus Group.
Comply with Practice Plus Group appraisal system and attend an appraisal yearly.
Attend mandatory training as required.
Assist in the mentorship, support, training and development of more junior colleagues.
To be able to identify own development needs, seeking assistance where necessary.
To complete competency assessments in all clinical skills used within the department.
Ensure understanding and application of all relevant policies and procedures.
To participate in the orientation and development of new staff to the department.
To display some prior knowledge of Radiology imaging modalities with a particular focus on ultrasound imaging.

Management responsibilities

To work as an effective team member ensuring we deliver high quality patient care at all times.

Work with the team to maintain high standards of cleanliness in clinical areas and encourage a positive, harmonious working environment.
Support the RMT to ensure the smooth running of the department, ensuring clinical rooms are stocked appropriately and all equipment and documentation is available when required.
Completing audits, both in-house, site wide and PPG wide.
To have the confidence to raise concerns as and when they arise.
To train Healthcare Assistance in Devices Surgical Centre as required.

In my previous job I worked 9 to 5 and I was on the road all the time. On top of that I was on call every weekend and my time was not my own or my family’s. The job as a Health Care Assistant (HCA) at HMP Hewell had a shift pattern of three long days a week, and those days change according to the rota. I worked one weekend in three, leaving me four days during the school week to be at home when my children came home. It was ideal in the holidays.
