About The Role

Make a difference from day one!

Prison Medicine is a very rewarding career, which offers a more varied day to day workload, with greater opportunities for flexible working and professional development, than community General Practice. No previous experience of working in prisons is required, as you will have a full induction and ongoing support from fellow GPs and the Regional Medical Lead.

What will you be doing?

You will provide primary care to patients within GP clinics - clinically assessing, diagnosing and treating patients, similar to that in the community but with the added benefit of being part of a fully integrated Healthcare department. There are mental health nurses, psychiatrists, physical health nurses, physiotherapists, dentists, podiatrists and sexual health services all available within the Prison Healthcare System.

You will also be an active member of the Multi-Disciplinary Team, and provide a highly specialist resource of knowledge and skills to other members of the healthcare team in the prison. There will be an active involvement in clinical governance and effectiveness activities, as we strive to give the best possible care to our patients.

Working as a GP in a secure environment gives you the flexibility to be able to provide specialised care to your patients, as well as dedicated admin time to ensure you manage your workload in a way that works for you.

About You

We recognise training and development is key, therefore we provide a training portal to facilitate your needs as well as have an in-depth induction for all staff whether you have experience of working in prisons or not. We offer an annual salary of up to £114,950 per annum as this vacancy will require you to work full time, 10 sessions a week which is 40 hours. You'll also get payment of MDU/MPS subscription and CPD days and if you are looking for portfolio work or cross site working, we can offer this on a temporary or permanent basis with the opportunities of extra shifts and overtime also.

We have a wide range of company benefits also, including a company contributory pension scheme, 25 days annual leave rising to 28 days with service plus 8 public bank holidays, access to shopping discounts and the NHS blue light card, financial assistance when you need it, and access to discounted memberships such as Costco.

Practice Plus Group were recently awarded the healthcare contract at HMP Altcourse and will begin delivering services in April 2023. HMP Altcourse is a Category B men's private prison and Young Offender Institution in the Fazakerley area of Liverpool in Merseyside, England. It has an operational capacity of 1164 people and houses 7 residential units, a 12 bed inpatient unit, as well as an-site dispensing pharmacy.

About Us

Prisons can be one of the most challenging yet enjoyable places for healthcare professionals to work. If you’re looking for a role where you can develop your existing skills and learn something new every day, in an environment that never stands still, then this could be it.

Practice Plus Group is a specialist provider of NHS services into prison healthcare across over 45 different prisons, young offenders and immigration removal centres. We believe in putting the patient first, regardless of the environment or their history. The prison population is one of the most vulnerable and challenged patient groups in society and the delivery of their health care is conducted within often difficult and demanding environments.

We are passionate about what we do and our core values are:

- We treat patients and each other as we would like to be treated
- We act with integrity
- We embrace diversity
- We strive to do things better together.

Please note that offers of employment are subject to Practice Plus Group Terms & Conditions and receipt of satisfactory references, an enhanced DBS check and prison vetting.

At Practice Plus Group we actively promote diversity and equal opportunities and we are committed to this in both the running of our prison healthcare service and how we recruit our staff. We actively encourage applications from everyone with the essential requirements of the job, regardless of any protected characteristics.
