About The Role

Are you looking for a new challenge within an exciting new service?

The Specialist Care Unit (SCU) is an innovative new service based at HMP Stafford. It will support patients from around the region, including Staffordshire and Worcestershire Prisons in addition to HMPs Birmingham and Stoke Heath.

Our new service will provide enhanced care to patients who need additional support because their needs are complex and/or unstable.

This service will consist of:

· A bed based service, offering up to 8 beds. Accommodating 2 long term beds and up to 6 short term (assessment/reablement) beds.

· A therapy led outreach service across the region providing assessment, advice and guidance.

Practice Plus Group manage the healthcare services at HMP Stafford including the SCU. We are Health in Justice Market leader, providing healthcare services to offenders across the country. Our model of care is our Wellbeing Approach – an integrated, comprehensive approach in recognition of the fact prisoners are a socially excluded group with healthcare needs which are complex and often associated with poor outcomes. It adopts the premise no single health/wellbeing factor can be taken in isolation of other motivational issues which might impact a person’s care

About You

What will you be doing?

This role brings a great opportunity to embrace change and embed culture. The role will be an experience like no other, requiring a diverse and mixed Occupational Therapy background. The role involves assessing, planning and delivering care and therapeutic interventions to patients with complex and/or unstable health care needs. Reviewing care and therapy interventions will be a key aspect of the role.

You can expect to be involved in all aspects of the care planning approach for clients within your case load. Multi partner working is essential, as is the right level of communication, team working skills and excellent record keeping skill.

As part of the Specialist Care Unit’s service, you will be part of the regional outreach service so will be expected to travel to sites and hospitals within the Midlands region to carry out assessments. So, you will be based at HMP Stafford and will also work off-site across our region’s sites and hospitals.

What do we need from you so you can do the job?

With a diploma/degree in Occupational Therapy and registered with the HCPC, you will need to be empathetic, caring and willing to learn and develop your skills. Experienced in working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, you'll be able to manage your own caseload and apply application of OT theory in the treatment of patients in an inpatient setting. An understanding of common medical, surgical and neurological conditions is also required.

It goes without saying that you’ll have a good understanding of health and safety, along with exemplary record keeping skills. Self-motivated and able to work well within a team, you’ll show plenty of initiative when it comes to handling a wide range of situations or seeking advice/direction should you find yourself in a situation with no prior knowledge.

Due to the scope of this role, you will be based at Stafford and also will provide support across the Midlands region. As some sites and hospitals are remote and difficult to access via public transport we would require applicants to have a valid driving licence and access to their own car. Beyond that, you should have a flexible approach and the ability to achieve changing priorities by managing your own time.
