About The Role

Make a difference from day one!

Our General Practitioners are extremely valued and well respected members of the Prison Healthcare community. We aim to deliver first class healthcare to a diverse group of patients and therefore as a General Practitioner at Practice Plus Group you get the opportunity to further develop your knowledge in areas you wouldn’t usually experience within a practice, or even A&E environment.

Prisons are one of the most challenging, yet rewarding places for healthcare professionals to work - if you’re looking for a role where you can develop your existing skills and learn something new every day in an environment that never stands still, then this is it!

What will you be doing?

As a member of the Multi-Disciplinary Team, you will provide clinical assessment and diagnosis to patient’s requirements and make timely decisions regarding future management. In addition to your patient-facing clinics, you will also provide a highly specialist resource to other members of the healthcare team at site, helping to shape how care is delivered, and supporting the team in complex cases.

About You

We recognise training and development is key, therefore we provide a training portal  to facilitate your needs as well as have an in-depth induction for all staff whether you have experience of working in prisons or not. You will gain insight into Mental Health and Substance Misuse, as well as access to a variety of training opportunities with the opportunity to work towards your RCGP level 2 and other qualifications should you wish. You will have the support of a senior colleague for advice and a regular opportunity to discuss challenges throughout your induction period.

We offer an annual salary of up to £120,000 per annum (pro rata for part time applications) plus payment of MDU/MPS subscription and CPD days. If you are looking for portfolio work or cross site working, we can offer this on a temporary or permanent basis with the opportunities of extra shifts and overtime.

We have a wide range of company benefits, including a company contributory pension scheme, 25 days annual leave rising to 28 days with service plus 8 public bank holidays (pro rata for part time applications), access to shopping discounts and the NHS blue light card, financial assistance when you need it, access to discounted memberships such as Costco and a cycle to work scheme.

About Us

HMP Lewes is based near the centre of the historical town of Lewes, which is just a 5 minute walk away. Whilst one of its first uses was to hold 300 Finnish Grenadiers as part of the Crimean War, it now has an operational capacity of 790 with a mixture of both remand and sentenced prisoners. Aside from working amongst a team of talented individuals, other benefits include cycle to work scheme, access to an onsite gym, free parking and subsidized café/restaurant.

What do our current GP’s say?

“Practice Plus Group embrace continued development of healthcare services in the 40 plus prisons for which they are responsible. One of my favourite things is being able to concentrate on clinical medicine with a really interesting patient group.” – Dr. Alex Griffiths, GP at HMP Doncaster and Regional Medical Lead for Yorkshire.

Practice Plus Group is a specialist provider of NHS services into prison healthcare across over 45 different prisons, young offenders and immigration removal centres. We believe in putting the patient first, regardless of the environment or their history. The prison population is one of the most vulnerable and challenged patient groups in society and the delivery of their health care is conducted within often difficult and demanding environments.

We are passionate about what we do and our core values are:

We treat patients and each other as we would like to be treated
We act with integrity
We embrace diversity
We strive to do things better together.
If this resonates with you then we’d like to hear from you!

Please note that offers of employment are subject to Practice Plus Group Terms & Conditions and receipt of satisfactory references, an enhanced DBS check and prison vetting.

At Practice Plus Group we actively promote diversity and equal opportunities and we are committed to this in both the running of our prison healthcare service and how we recruit our staff. We actively encourage applications from everyone with the essential requirements of the job, regardless of any protected characteristics.
