About The Role

Working within a high secure environment can be challenging yet rewarding, interesting and stimulating. As a complex care nurse, you will predominantly be responsible for overseeing the care of men located within the Care, Separation and Re-integration Unit (CSRU) including the inpatient unit located in the healthcare department. HMP Long Lartin has the biggest CSRU in Europe. It has always been a concern that men located within the CSRU have limited input, access and provision to co-ordinated care which can have a detrimental effect on their physical and mental health. The inpatient unit, which is a smaller unit, holds a maximum of 8 men who could be admitted for a variety of reasons; mental health, physical health or palliative care.

This role requires an individual who is open to taking on a new challenge, has the ability to remain calm and is able to be flexible to meet the needs of an ever changing population within a complex environment.

Your role and responsibilities will solely be for those of the men located within these units.

About You

Principal Activities – Clinical

Be aware of NHS England and Prison service policies and protocols and use these to support the delivery of nursing care to prisoners. Contribute ideas to help formulate and update policies with the healthcare service.
Undertake segregation rounds to ensure that all prisoners are fit for segregated conditions
Undertake inpatient rounds to ensure the needs of the patient are being met within the unit
Complete and maintain care plans for men in inpatients and the segregation unit.
Review prisoners to ensure they are meeting all their physical and mental health needs including LTC reviews.
Attend Assessment, Care in Custody and Teamwork (ACCT) reviews of any patients who are located within the CSRU and/or inpatient unit.
Attend complex case conferences to discuss any complex patients.
Attend local mental health team meeting to liaise and contribute in regards to any men you are concerned about.
Organise and implement clinics/appointments for the men located within the segregation unit
Attend admission to segregation boards (R45) which are held weekly for men
Undertake clinics to meet the needs of the population
Administration of medication

Principal Activities - Education and development

Identify personal education and development needs
Positively participates with the healthcare team to initiate and deliver education and training in the theory and practice of prison healthcare for both pre and post registration nurses and others.
Use current, appropriate and evidence based practice
Principal Activities – Professional
Contribute to and work within the broad framework of the clinical governance
Assist the development of evidence-based nursing procedures / protocols in the practice setting
Work in close partnership with other members of the primary healthcare team
Work with members of the statutory and voluntary agencies to provide appropriate care to meet the assessed individual nursing needs of the patient
Practice within the codes of conduct issued by the professional / regulatory body
Practice within their own competencies and within practice plus group policies
To accurately record all healthcare activity within the prisoners clinical record.
Ensure that communication is effective between the multi-disciplinary team giving adequate attention to complex and sensitive natured information.
Make all reasonable attempts to overcome barriers
Principal Activities – Administrative
Follow Practice Plus Group and prison policies, procedures and guidelines
To participate in clinical audit and action any recommendations

You’ll receive an annual salary up to £40,973 per annum - depending on experience
