About The Role

Develop yourself, change lives!

Have you ever considered working in a prison environment before? Perhaps the idea feels daunting. Working within the Healthcare team at HMP Lewes is an opportunity to work holistically, and to provide exceptional care with kindness and compassion. You could make a real difference to someone’s present and future. You do not need to have prison experience as we will provide you with a full induction and training.
This is an opportunity to use all of your clinical and interpersonal skills, an opportunity to develop new abilities, and to work with a unique population group that would benefit from what you can bring to the team. If you would like to know more before applying, please feel free to arrange an appointment for one of the team to show you around the prison and see for yourself what working here is like.
We look forward to speaking with you.

What do we need from you so you can do the job?

As a Registered Nurse, you’ll be an integral part of the multi-disciplinary healthcare team by bringing your top-notch clinical skills and passion for care.
With plenty of primary care experience, you could be involved in anything from developing and leading clinics (well man, health promotion), undertaking examinations and tests as well as answering emergency bells, and potentially being the first person to attend an emergency.
If you have a passion for bringing new ideas to the table then we’re here to listen to how we can improve and continue to develop our healthcare service within the prison environment.

Interested in clinical development?

At Practice Plus we encourage our staff to continually develop themselves. You can specialise in a role of your interest (which benefits the service) i.e. ANP, BBV, sexual health, plastering, ILS (intermediate life support), health promotion, phlebotomy, vaccinations, suturing, wound care, RCGP, and long term condition courses.

In return for your hard work you will...

Receive an annual salary of up to £33,000 - dependent on experience. You'll also get several benefits including a company contributory pension scheme, 25 days annual leave, increasing with service up to 28 days per year + bank holiday, CPD, and re-validation support. Other benefits include cycle to work scheme plus training and clinical development opportunities. Onsite benefits at HMP Lewes include access to an onsite gym, free parking, and subsidised café/restaurant.

About You

You will be eager to develop your clinical skills in an environment that is ever-changing. If you are self-motivated and able to work autonomously as well as showing plenty of initiative when it comes to handling a wide range of situations, then this could be the right role for you!

You should possess a good working knowledge of conducting risk assessments and care planning as well as someone who is creative and forward-thinking to work through the issues that may arise in this challenging but exciting environment. Knowledge in therapeutic interventions such as CBT or Steps to Wellbeing is desirable but transferable clinical skills will be considered with appropriate training provided.

About Us

HMP Lewes is a local category B men’s prison for those on remand to local courts as well as those who have been sentenced and those awaiting release. With an operational capacity of 692, HMP Lewes is based in Lewes in East Sussex, within the South Downs National Park. It’s approximately 25 minutes from Brighton and Hove, 35 minutes from Eastbourne and Worthing by car.

We’re the UK’s leading independent provider of healthcare services in prisons and youth prisoner establishments.

We believe in putting the patient first, regardless of the environment or their history. That’s why we’re proud to deliver quality healthcare in some of the most challenging environments; care that is equal to what you receive in the community. We’re passionate about making a difference in the lives of prisoners by improving their health, securing their wellbeing, and helping to reduce reoffending behaviour.

We deliver round-the-clock healthcare to more than 40,000 patients at over 45 prisons of all categories. Prisons are a community like any other and we offer all of the health services any community needs in one place and with a single team. These range from reception health checks on arrival and regular GP services, to help with substance misuse, mental health, chronic or long-term conditions, podiatry, physiotherapy, and optometry.
